Mr. Charles Cotton is a Director of Cambridge Enterprise, the University of Cambridge arm responsible for spin-outs, licensing and consulting, where he is also a member of the Investment Committee.
Mr. Cotton’s professional career spans the automotive and high-technology industries. Today, his primary interests are global hi-tech businesses and the development of technology clusters. Mr. Cotton founded and chairs Cambridge Phenomenon Ltd., working to advance the Cambridge technology cluster. He is Chairman of Cambridge-based Neul Ltd., a leading provider of solutions for machine-to-machine communications. Mr. Cotton is also a Director of Solarflare Inc. and XMOS Ltd.
Prior to its acquisition by TomTom, in 2008, Mr. Cotton was a Supervisory Board member of Euronext Amsterdam-listed, digital maps leader, Tele Atlas, for which he also chaired the Compensation Committee and was a member of the Nominating Committee. Previously, he was Executive Chairman of GlobespanVirata Inc., a NASDAQ-listed global broadband solutions provider, and CEO of Virata Corp., which he took public on NASDAQ in 1999.
Mr. Cotton was President of Thermal Scientific Inc., and a Director of London Stock Exchange-listed Thermal Scientific Ltd. His engagement in high technology dates back to 1983 when he was Sales and Marketing Director at Sinclair Research Ltd. After graduating, Mr. Cotton held senior operations, finance, marketing and product planning positions at British Leyland and Ford.
Mr. Cotton holds a BA Hons in Physics from Oxford University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
